Kusama is a live blockchain network built on the same Substrate/relay-chain architecture as Polkadot. Originally launched as Polkadot's "canary network" for testing parachains and runtime upgrades, its 2025 governance-approved roadmap (backed by a 10 million DOT allocation from the Web3 Foundation) repositioned it as an independent, experiment-focused peer network in its own right.
